PATTERN

CHILD

With the red yarn make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc into the ring, ch 2 -count as a dc-, 11 dc into the ring. Sl st in first dc. Turn _ 12 sts

Rnd 2: Ch 1, (sc, ch 2 -count as a dc-, dc) in the first st, 2 dc in each st around. Turn _ 24 sts

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in the first st, ch 2 -count as a dc-, 2 dc, [dc, 2 dc] all around. Sl st in first dc. Turn.  _ 36 sts

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 2 -count as a dc-, dc, 2 dc. [dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc] all around. Sl st in first dc. Turn. _ 48 sts

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 2 -count as a dc-, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc. [dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc] all around. Sl st in first dc. Turn. _ 60 sts

Rnds 6 & 7: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 2 -count as a dc-, dc all around. Sl st in first dc. Turn. _ 60 sts

Change to black.

Rnd 8: Repeat round 7. _ 60 sts

Change to white.

Rnds 9 & 12: Repeat round 7. _ 60 sts

Don’t finish off, continue with the earflap.

Right Earflap

Row 13: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 2 -count as a dc-, dc2tog, dc in next 9 sts, dc2tog. Turn. _ 12 sts

Row 14: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 2 -count as a dc-, dc2tog twice, dc in next 5 sts, dc2tog twice. Turn. _ 8 sts

Row 15: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 2 -count as a dc-, dc2tog, dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog. Turn. _ 6 sts

Row 16: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 3, sc in the last st of row.

Finish off.

To make the left earflap skip 11 sts at the back of the hat and attach the yarn in the 12^th st. Repeat all from row 13.

Braids

Cut 6 26 inches long strings of yarn of each color and attach them to the loop left at the end of the right earflap as you would do to put fringes and braid them. Repeat on the other earflap.

Button

With the white yarn make a magic ring.

Change to black.
